Wellington is 4-2 after two weeks of play, the Heat went 1-1 against against the Denver Cougars, winning 5-0 on June 3, then falling 6-3 on June 4. In the third of the three-game home stand, Wellington beat the Salina Blue Jays 17-5.
This time next week the 2015-2016 school year will be in the can. All events will have ended - the year complete.
It ain't over yet though folks! Crusaders are spread out across the State of Kansas this week, after earning trips to their respective State Events!
STATE 4A GOLF
The 2016 STATE 4A DIV 1 SOFTBALL BRACKET has been released. Wellington's Lady Crusaders (17-5) are the #4 seed and will go up against #5 seed Independence (17-5) on Thursday, May 26th at 7:00PM. The tournament is being played in Salina at the Bill Burke Complex located at 1501 E. Crawford.
Wellington has advanced in the 4A, Div. I State Tournament, defeating DeSoto 62-57 on Wednesday. The Lady-Crusaders will play in the next round on Friday at 3 p.m. in Salina against either Paola or Abilene.
Early game jitters were visible for both teams on Wednesday as each tried to make it just another basketball game. Throughout most of the first, the teams traded one and two point leads. But big baskets by Lauryn Snipes and Grace Mitchell helped give Wellington a 16-11 lead headed into the second.
By winning the Regional 4A Tournament Saturday in Rose Hill, WHS Senior Heavyweight Wrestler Miguel Lujan (35-9) will go up against Iola's Colton Toney (19-11 and finished 4th at Regionals Saturday) in match 105 on Friday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, KS. There were four 285 lb. qualifiers from each of the four 4A Regionals this past weekend, resulting in 16 wrestlers in the 285 weight class vying for the TOP 6 finishes and a State Medal this coming weekend in Salina.
