The IRONDUKES took their show on the road for the 3rd time this season and for the 3rd time, came HOME with a "W"!
It was semi-final action in Rose Hill Friday evening for the Lady Crusaders, Lady Vikings, Lady Rockets and Lady Wildcats. In the opener, our very own WHS Lady Crusaders pulled away in the 2nd half vs Winfield, much like the Crusaders on Thursday did vs Rose Hill. Up only 4 at half, the Wellington girls Friday doubled their score by 3rd quarters' end and added another 15 down the stretch to defeat the Lady Vikings and send them packing for another year, final score Wellington 57 Winfield 38.
The last time the IRONDUKES put a win up on the board it was at Rose Hill, district play game #1 last season and Wellington won that one 44-20. History would not repeat itself for a road win in Rocket Country this go-round. After a nearly scoreless game Friday night, Rose Hill would prevail 7-6 over a Wellington team that continues to get snake-bit by unnecessary penalties at inopportune times. This would be Rose Hill's first win since the 2014 season.
In heartbreaking fashion, Wellington lost to Rose Hill in the boys 4A Sub-State Championship game 53-46 on March 5.
Wellington's second and third chance shots weren't falling in the first half. They trailed 14-5 against Rose Hill after one. They did get on the board first, but it was tough going from then on.
At the start of the second, AJ Snipes swished a three from the top of the arch, and the Crusaders began to claw away at the Rocket lead. Snipes would go on to lead the team in scoring, without any buckets in the fourth - more on that later.
The Wellington girls basketball team is state-bound! Rose Hill didn't have enough on March 5 in the Sub-State Championship, hosted at WHS, the home team won by 13; but it was a slow start.
SATURDAY WRAP (6:04PM)
