After a great start with a 50 yd kick return by Sophomore Julian Jimenez, events didn't unfold in a positive way and in the end Friday night at Collegiate, the Crusaders came up short 52-0, generating less than 100 yds offense and allowing 7 TD's and a FG to seal the dominating win by the Spartans who showed strength in both their ground and aerial games. Prior to the Spartan JV coming on the field in the 2nd half, Collegiate had completed 17 of 19 passes for "5" TD's...Wellington struggled on both sides of the ball.
The last time the IRONDUKES put a win up on the board it was at Rose Hill, district play game #1 last season and Wellington won that one 44-20. History would not repeat itself for a road win in Rocket Country this go-round. After a nearly scoreless game Friday night, Rose Hill would prevail 7-6 over a Wellington team that continues to get snake-bit by unnecessary penalties at inopportune times. This would be Rose Hill's first win since the 2014 season.
The weather was picture-book perfect Friday evening at Sellers Park for the 2016 Irondukes season debut, hosting their league opponent Clearwater Indians. Zero wind and awesome temps made at least that aspect of the evening pleasant and enjoyable. A large contingent of Crusader Fans were in the stadium, the west side nearly full with RED being the dominating color! Clearwater brought a good following of their own - burgers were frying and the atmosphere was set!
