With an undefeated "regular" season on the line, the Wellington Lady Crusader Varsity basketball squad made history Thursday evening at Clearwater, snagging their 20th regular season win with ZERO losses - final score Wellington 70 Clearwater 27. The Lady Crusaders hit the floor running and never looked back. By halftime the lead had stretched to nearly 30 points and it surpassed that mark early on in the 3rd, causing (by rule) for the clock operator to "let 'er run" when the 4th qtr began.

The boys in red avenged a loss from earlier in the season on Tuesday, defeating Circle at home.

It was a very even match up at WHS on Tuesday, reflected by the first quarter scoreboard which read 14-13 Crusaders when it was over. Ian King had a big impact on defense with a handful of blocked shots. He was also the the leading scorer in the first with eight.

During a stretch of the second Wesley Gilmore scored five straight points for Wellington. King continued to cause havoc for the Thunderbirds down low and WHS grew their lead to 30-21 at half.

For the first time in the history of the school, Wellington's girls basketball team is League Champion. A 51-32 win at home against Circle was the clincher. Grace Mitchell lead the team in scoring with 15 points, she and Lauryn Snipes who had 12 were the only WHS players in double-digits, but this was a team win through and through.

It was a low scoring affair in the first quarter, but Wellington got out of it with a six point advantage. Circle had some nice shot attempts but none that fell as WHS won the turnover battle and the rebounds. After one it was 11-5 after one.

The variety boys fall back to .500 on the season with a loss on the road to Wichita Collegiate on Feb. 19. Whatever the Crusaders needed to compete with the Spartans, they left it in Wellington.

Scoring looked easy for the Spartans in the early goings, netting four points before the ball made it to the Crusaders side of the court after a WHS inbounds pass was stolen and put in for a quick bucket after an open possession Collegiate jumper.

Lady-Crusaders make it 18 in a row at Collegiate

Create: 02/19/2016 - 19:27

The Lady-Crusaders are 18-0 after downing Wichita Collegiate on the road Feb. 19. It was a tight race between Grace Mitchell and Avery Rusk for the leading scorer for WHS, with Rusk besting her career high (13 points vs Winfield earlier this month) with 24 on Friday. Mitchell finished with 22.

The ladies in red were short handed as usual starter Lauryn Snipes was out with eye injury. However it isn't considered serious and she is expected to be back in action next week.
