UPDATE: The Santa Barbara Foresters downed the NJCAA National Team Saturday evening in the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME at the NBC WORLD SERIES by the final score of 6-5.
The season, with its fruition clear back in late May, ended Friday night/early Saturday morning for the WELLINGTON HEAT baseball team. The NJCAA National Team proved to be too much for the HEAT in semi-final action, at the 2018 NBC World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita. NJCAA will vie with the Santa Barbara Foresters in Championship action Saturday evening after downing 4-0 San Antonio Angels 11-2 in the other semi Friday. The HEAT end the season at 44-10.
A scoreless affair through the first 2 1/2 innings, the HEAT were productive in the bottom of the 3rd, taking and holding the 3 run lead until the 6th. Wellington HEAT pitcher Craig Knoche went 5.1 innings, turning the pitching duties over to Wyatt Haccou with the game knotted at 3. Haccou would give up 2 more runs and take the loss in the end. Ulysses Ramos would relieve Haccou after 1.1 innings, and would give up another run in the 8th, the NJCAA lead now extended to 3, up 6-3 after 8. In the top of the 9th, NJCAA added an insurance run with Crawford on the mound for Wellington. The HEAT couldn't answer, final score 7-3, NJCAA advances to the Championship game slated for Saturday, season ends for the HEAT. The relief pitchers for the HEAT gave up 8 walks and struck out 7.
With 2 down in the 3rd, the Wellington HEAT got on the scoreboard, when an Amaro single to left drove in Burts, a balk by NJCAA pitcher Diaz scored Lyon and a single to center by Rankin would score Amaro, after 3 innings the HEAT were up 3-0. The HEAT cleats wouldn't find HOME PLATE again. The NJCAA bats came to life in the 6th, scoring 3, in the 7th they added 2 more and would close out the game with runs in the 8th and 9th as well. It was BAD NEWS BEARS time for the HEAT who had won 4 straight during Championship Week play. Interestingly, all 4 semi-final teams stood at 4-1 after semi-final play, but only 2 would advance to Championship action on Saturday. (Santa Barbara & NJCAA National Team).
