The Wellington Heat opened the 2018 NBC Baseball World Series Friday afternoon, taking on the Stars from San Diego. The Heat qualified for Championship Round action via their KCLB League Title a couple weeks back. The Heat ended regular season and league tournament play at 40-9.

In NBC opening action, the HEAT jumped out early over the Stars, leading 2-0 after 1 inning of play. Starting HEAT pitcher Steve Pastora and his infield, retired the first 3 batters with ground balls to 3rd, 1st and short.  In the bottom half, the HEAT lit it up with 3 hits, Burts a single to left, Rankin a double that would score Burts and Koch with a single to right, scoring Rankin in a close play at the plate.

Pastora, maintained control in the 2nd inning, allowing the Stars, just 1 hit. The HEAT kept the heat on in the bottom of that inning, increasing the lead to 3, on 2 hits, the first by Burts who successfully bunted Robinson to 2nd (Burts 2nd hit & and was safe at 1st). Lyon walked, loading the bases. Amaro came up and singled to center, scoring Robinson and Burts, (almost), who was thrown out in a close play at the plate. The inning would end with a Rankin pop-up and the HEAT after 2, up 3-0 on 5 hits and no errors. STARS after 2, 1 hit, 1 error. (Dubler singled earlier on an error by the Stars short stop)

The bats remained silent for the Stars in the 3rd, Pastora did give up a walk which was quickly remedied though by a 6-4-3 double play. In the bottom of the 3rd, the HEAT continued to fire on all 8 cylinders. Connolly lead off with a single and then stole 2nd. Koch would pop-out to RF and Curtis would ground out to the short stop. With 1 on and 2 out, Dubler singles, scoring Connolly. Robinson gets a hit to center and the STARS said it was time to make a change on the mound. With the new pitcher in for San Diego, Burts, the Heat lead-off batter, up for his 3rd time in as many innings and having already racked up 2 hits, was caught looking and the side was retired. Score after 3, Wellington Heat 4 San Diego Stars 0

Pastora continued with good control in the 4th, allowing just 1 base runner (BB), retiring the other 3 with ground outs or pop-ups. Lyon would lead off in the bottom of inning with a strike-out, 1st baseman Amaro hits it hard to right for a double. He would advance no further though, as Rankin would pop up to 1st and Connolly would pop up to 3rd, the first scoreless inning of the game, but the HEAT remained up 4-0.

Pastora continued to work his magic in the 5th, 3 up, 3 down – a ground out, a strike out and a pop-up for the west coast Stars. The bottom of the 5th brought up Heat center fielder Koch, who smacked a triple to right center, the Heat’s 10th hit of the game. Curtis would follow with a ground out to first that would score Koch. Dubler popped out to center for out 2, Robinson puts up the 11th hit of the game for the HEAT with a line drive to left field for a single. Burts, batting for the 4th time got hit by a pitch, advancing Robinson to 2nd. With 2 on, 2 out, Lyon draws a walk to load ‘em up. The Stars decided it was time for their 2nd pitching change. With bases loaded, Amaro flies out to left, after 5, it’s the HEAT up 5!

Ditto, ditto, and ditto for Pastora in the 6th! 3 Stars up, 3 Stars down – (strike out, ground outs to both short stop and 2nd). Catcher Joe Rankin would lead off for the Heat in the bottom of the 6th, with a single to center, his 2nd hit of the game. Connolly advanced Rankin to 2nd with a successful 1/2 bunt 1/2 hit to 3rd. With runners now on 1st and 2nd, Koch bangs a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Rankin and advancing Connelly to 3rd. Curtis came to the plate with just 1 out and runners on the corners, Koch got caught off first base but returned safely. On the next pitch, Koch stole 2nd base, an errant throw by the Stars allowed Connolly on 3rd to score safely. Curtis popped out to left for out #2, Heat up now 7-0 with 1 on. Dubler pops up for the 3rd out. Heat up 7-0 after 6. Pastora, after a ground out, hit the batter, putting 1 on with just 1 out. The 2nd, 6-4-3 double play of the game for the HEAT took care of that situation. Stars still down, 7-0 after 6 ½. The Stars would retire all 3 Heat batters in the bottom of the inning. Score remained 7-0 with 2 innings to go in this 2018 NBC World Series Opener!

In the top of the 8th, Pastora continued to take care of business, 3 Stars up, 3 Stars down, (2 strike-outs and a pop-up). For just the 2nd time in the game, the Heat went 3 up 3 down, going into the 9th, Heat up 7-0 and just 3 outs away with an opening win in the 2018 NBC World Series. It wouldn’t come easy, an RBI double and a passed 3rd strike pitch, resulting in another run, reduced the Heat’s lead to 5 with two outs and two on. (7-2) A pop-up, which seemed certain to be the final out, was lost in the sun by Burts @ 2nd base, 2 runs scored, it’s now 7-4 with 1 on and 2 away. The final batter went down on 3 strikes - HEAT WINS 7-4! Way to go WELLINGTON!
