It was QUARTERFINAL action for the Wellington Heat Thursday evening in Wichita, at the 2018 NBC Baseball World Series being played at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The (3-0) Heat in Championship Week competition, would take on the (2-1) Seattle Studs – winner advance, loser go home. Sam Curtis was on the mound for the HEAT and the battle was on. Through several pitching changes, several stranded runners, and a late game rally by the Studs, in the end it didn’t matter. Steve Pastora came in from the bullpen in the 9th and shut down the Studs, final score WELLINGTON HEAT 4 SEATTLE STUDS 3. Wellington advances to semi-final action on Friday and of course a win Friday will place them in the championship game Saturday, but hey, one game at a time.

The HEAT jumped out early, scoring 1 in the first, 2 in the 2nd and another 1 in the 4th, to lead 4-1 after 6. Just when things were trending towards comfortable, the Studs start clawing away in the 7th & 8th innings and pull back to within 1 run. Down 3-4 going into the 9th, their lead-off batter Ken McCormick advances to 1st on a single. (Viydo comes in to pinch-run for McCormick). With Viydo on 1st, Jacob Hirsh strikes out swinging, 1 on, 1 out and Tanner Arrington advances to 1st after being hit by a pitch, sending Viydo to 2nd. The HEAT’s Henderson is retired from the mound, replaced by Steve Pastora out of the bullpen to pitch to Garrett Breda. Breda made Pastora work for it, but was eventually out number 2. Matt Zoba stepped up, with 2 on, and with hopes fading for the west coasters, a 5-3 putout ended Seattle’s season and gave the HEAT their 4th victory at the NBC Tournament, and punched their ticket for Friday’s semi-final vs the NJCAA National Team that beat the Colorado Cyclones, 9-8, in the quarterfinal nightcap at Lawrence-Dumont.

Each team had 9 hits on the evening, the Studs also had an error, one that would turn out to be costly in the end. In the 2nd inning, when HEAT’s Dubler should have been out, the Studs first baseman bobbled the ball, Dubler was safe and would score 3 batters later in what would eventually be a 1 run victory for the HEAT.
