Wellington's DeAndre Washington was a member of the "WEST" squad this year, the 1st Wellington Crusader to be selected for the Shrine Bowl since Tim Lira in 2003. over the East squad, in front of a large crowd at Dodge's Memorial Stadium. Players for both squads said over and over in numerous interviews, it wasn't about winning, it was about helping the kids in Shriner Hospitals. Proceeds from the Shrine Bowl benefit those hospitals and those kids.
Other events lead up to the game on Saturday evening. In addition to the practices, there's a golf scramble, there's the Shriner Hospital and kids experience, there's a banquet, lots of great stuff. There is also a Cheerleading Camp associated with the Shrine Bowl, and a Combine put on by some smaller colleges that 150 cheerleaders participate in. WHS Jr. Elise LeGrand applied to take part in the Cheerleader Camp and was selected. She was excited about cheering on DeAndre and now she was to be part of a camp as well. She did well at the camp, made the "select" team and then on Saturday, at the Combine, after all 150 participants were finished, an ELITE EIGHT out of that group was selected....drum roll.....Elise was one of the "8" - awesome stuff Elise! Congratulations! She and the other 7 were introduced after the 3rd qtr of the football game and received a plaque! She also now has the option to return next year and be on the Cheer Staff.
A big week and weekend for WHS, great representation by DeAndre and Elise in Dodge City!
Watch for an interview, later this week on CH 55. I'll be sitting down with both DeAndre and Elise so they can share their experiences at Dodge City and the Shrine Bowl.
