Athletes honored at annual banquet

A big night out at Wellington High School Wednesday evening. The 2017 All Sports Banquet was held with a large crowd in attendance. Following the program in the auditorium, a pot-luck dinner was held in the Commons area.

The program itself gave each Crusader and Lady Crusader coach the opportunity to talk about their respective teams and respective team members. Letters and pins were handed out while the accomplishments of the recipients were highlighted, including league and state honors and more!

The evening got off to a great start when Crusader Club President Colby Zeka presented WHS Athletic Director Luke Smith with a $5,000.00 donation for the athletic programs. There is a great working relationship between the Crusader Club and the schools, a relationship that is very beneficial to the student-athletes of USD 353 School District.

Coach Zane Aguilar presented the annual "Coach GIFF" True Crusader Award and this year's recipient was Senior Michael Billington. The "Coach Giff" True Crusader Award is given annually to a senior who best exemplifies the characteristics of Wellington Football. This recipient must demonstrate the following characteristics: A good student, a hard worker, committed 100% to the football program, dedicated, and a team player with a positive attitude. The award is in honor of John Gifford, a longtime Crusader Coach who dedicated his life to Wellington Football!. Congratulations to Michael!!

The guest speaker at tonight's affair was Kelly Adams, the 1990 Outstanding Male Athlete at WHS. His message was clear - "GET INVOLVED", not just the student-athletes themselves but the community as well - we have great support of many of the programs and Kelly encouraged continued support in all. His message to the student-athletes was apropos - be a participant and reduce the number of regrets as you reflect back about high school in the years ahead. Set goals and achieve goals and have a great life. Simple but real.

The evening culminated with the announcement of this year's OUTSTANDING MALE AND FEMALE ATHLETES - congratulations to Seniors Chris Kop and Jaycee Schettler!! Chris participated in football and is presently a strong member of the Track & Field squad. Jaycee participated in Cross Country, Powerlifting and too is a strong member of the Track & Field squad - again, congratulations to both of these fine WHS Student-Athletes - awesome job Chris and Jaycee!

In closing, kudos to WHS A.D. Luke Smith who is very keen about tradition and very keen about providing a positive atmosphere in the athletic programs at both WHS and WMS. Mr. Smith revamped the Sports Banquet this year and has made other enhancements, all with the intent and result of increasing the pride level and committment of our student athletes and coaches at good ole Wellington High. Proud to be a Crusader for sure!!
