On April 7, 2019, at "A NIGHT at the LIED", which is an annual awards ceremony for the approximately 750 University of Nebraska student-athletes.
Wellington native and daughter of Jud Mitchell and Cathy Mitchell, Grace Mitchell received several prestigious awards. Grace is a junior on the Lady Huskers basketball team.
For the 3rd year in a row, she received an academic award of excellence. She was presented the Highest Honors Gold Medallion for achieving a 3.75-4.00 GPA based on her grades during the previous year.
For her efforts outside of the classroom and in the community, Grace was named to the 2019 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and received a medal as well. Nebraska athletics has established a culture of service and leadership with the Husker Life Skills program in which student-athletes volunteer in activities ranging from one-on-one mentoring to motivational speaking at school assemblies. In addition, Grace serves her campus and community on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership board and as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member. This is the third year Grace has received this award.
"Dream Big, Work Hard, and Stay Humble" epitomized Sam Foltz, one of Nebraska's most decorated punters and scholar-athlete leaders who tragically passed away in the summer of 2016. Grace was chosen for the award based on the criteria of commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, service to others, care, humility, genuineness, and willingness to go above and beyond. Grace Mitchell was humbled and proud to be named a Sam Foltz Hero Leader and received a commemorative ice trophy.
